Maize was purchased off Craig's List by a woman who had the intention of getting her well and finding her a new home.  The Good Samaritan quickly realized she was in over her head.  Maize needed a lot more vet care than she was able to provide.  She called us and we came running.

Maize is approximately 15 - 20 pounds underweight.  Her urine is the color of Pepsi.  She has ear infections, eye infections, bad teeth, allergies, skin infections, and she has the marks on her neck from being chained to a tree or other post.  We believe she is partially blind and deaf, but we are hoping proper care will improve her sight and hearing.  She will be under vet care for the next 30 to 60 days while we work on getting her healed up.

Updates

  • Mazie is doing better on her new medications, but she is still in a lot of pain.  She is maxed out on her pain meds and we are out of options to get her anymore comfort.  We may be changing the heart medications again to see if a stronger medication helps.

  • Mazie's heart is so enlarged it is pushing on her trachea.  She is now on a new very expensive heart medication and still needing her daily Lasix and pain medications.  The new medications seem to have given her some relief and she is resting more comfortably.

  • Mazie is having a hard time with her enlarged heart and liver and has began panting at night for hours.  She is sometimes unsteady on her feet, however, she is still eating well and guarding her bed.

  • Mazie had a few rough weeks.  Her liver and heart were giving her issues and she would sit up at night panting very hard.  The vet was able to change some of her meds to relieve the pressure and she is doing better.  We don't know how long we have with this sweet girl, but we love her dearly.

  • Mazie went back to the vet on the 26th to have her stitches removed from the entopion and they discovered her eyes were still too sensitive.  So, they waited a week and removed the stitches on August 2nd.  At that time our vet noticed she was retaining fluid and decided to run some tests and do some more x-rays.

Mazie has been diagnosed with an enlarged heart and enlarged liver.  Due to spondylosis on her spine in 3 different places, our vet estimates her age to be about 9 or 10.  We have started Mazie on Lasix to keep the fluid off her heart and moved her into a hospice foster home.  She will be kept comfortable and she will be loved for whatever days she has left.

  • Mazie is still doing great in the foster home and is getting stronger every day.  She goes back to the vet on the 26th for a checkup and to have her stitches removed from the entropion surgery.  She's a little trooper with a great personality.

  • Mazie is still holding her own at the vet's office and getting ready for her 2nd surgery.  The remaining hernias will be closed up.  We are hoping for surgery to be done tomorrow (7/12/2017).  Please say a prayer for our sweet Mazie.

  • Mazie is up at the vet's and eating.  She will be staying with the vet again tonight and he will evaluate her tomorrow.  We are hoping she will get to go to her foster home to complete her recuperation.  The next round of surgeries will be in a couple of weeks.

  • Mazie was rushed into emergency surgery this morning. The vet believes she has a hernia large enough for her intestines to fall through the abdominal wall. We'll have an update soon.
