Today we found out that our sweet Xoe girl needs a surgery called femoral head ostectomy (FHO) to fix a broken femur near her hip joint. This is an old injury that was never treated, and hasn't healed correctly. She is in a lot of pain and desperately needs the FHO surgery as well as physical therapy in order to live a long, pain-free life.

Xoe came to Found Nation Animal Rescue as a stray with a limp. We didn't know why she was limping, but her paw pad was in pretty rough shape so we assumed that was why she limped and that it would heal soon. Her paw did heal, but the limping continued. She didn't seem to be in pain, her attitude was happy and playful, so we just thought the limp was from an old injury that didn't heal correctly. We thought she'd always limp, but it wasn't a big deal, it was just "Xoe". A few weeks after we had Xoe, we realized that she was pregnant. We opted to not terminate the pregnancy (like one of our vets recommended), and a month later she had 6 beautiful, healthy babies. Xoe was a great mom, very protective and loving. She raised her babies until they were 8 weeks old and then they were adopted out. However, the limping continued. As the weeks passed, we grew more and more concerned. Why was she still limping?

Today was the day of Xoe's spay appointment. We asked the vet to give us an opinion on her leg, to see what could be wrong and what we could do, if anything. They took a look and felt her hip and knew immediately that something was wrong. They guessed a hip dislocation, but they could also feel scar tissue, so they thought it might be something worse. We decided to get an X-ray while she was under to see what was really going on, and it was worse than we could have imagined.

Xoe has a femur fracture right near her hip joint. It is probably around 6 months old, and happened before she came to us. It did not heal correctly and has formed a lot of scar tissue, so she will need surgery. It is extremely painful for her, though by her happy-go-lucky attitude, you'd never know. The most likely cause of the fracture is abuse. We know Xoe was abused as when she first came to us, she was terrified of men and leashes. She would cower and urinate all over herself in fear. The vet said that this sort of injury (femur fracture at the hip) could have been caused by someone kicking her hard.

Someone KICKED our sweet, happy Xoe girl. And now WE are going to help her, but we need YOUR help! The surgery will cost $1500, which doesn't include the cost of the X-rays, anti-inflammatories, pain medication, or physical therapy. We are just trying to raise funds for the surgery now, but anything raised over $1500 will cover the rest of her treatments and care. EVERY. PENNY. COUNTS! Please help our sweet Xoe girl live a long, happy, pain-free life.

  • Xoe's babies are 2 weeks old today. They have each gained close to a pound in the last week, and are all around 3 pounds now. They are starting to make "barking" noises, their eyes are opening, and they are "playing" with each other. But mostly they just sleep and eat.
