Hit by a car, unable to walk & left to suffer

  • Breed: Golden Retriever
  • Name: Scooby
  • Sex: Male
  • Age: Young

$5,820.00 raised of $6,300.00

Scooby was hit by a car, leaving his back legs useless. His legs now drag behind him, causing him unimaginable pain with every movement.

After being hit by a car, it was clear that Scooby was hurt and in pain, yet his past owners did nothing for this poor angel. Instead, they allowed him to drag his legs in pain for an unknown amount of time. A kind neighbor convinced the owner to give him up, so she could get him to the vet.

Specialists have confirmed that Scooby has feeling in his legs, but he has a broken spine. However, they believe that with love and the right medical treatment, Scooby will be able to walk on his own again. For now, Scooby has been given pain meds and anti-inflammatory pills to get the swelling down. It will be a long road to recovery for Scooby, but even after all he's been through, this sweet boy is loving and strong. This angel deserved so much better.

Please consider helping Scooby by donating to his medical needs or by purchasing some items for him from his wishlist. He should never have been left to suffer, but with your support, he will never suffer again.

We are elated by this update so here we go.....
From SCOOBY's amazing foster mom Ellen
"Today, Scooby returned to Coamo for his post op appointment. He was impatient though the wait wasn't so long. The vet tech removed Scooby's staples and then she took down his weight. After, Scooby crawled back on the scale to demand a recount but he was still 23 lbs! Dr. Colon came in and examined Scooby, testing the response in his legs, before declaring: "This dog will walk again!" Scooby will be fitted for a temporary wheelchair while his back heals and he will travel to Cabo Rojo for laser treatments with Dr. Cristina. Then, he will start PT. Dr. Colon estimates that Scooby will be ready for adoption around June. Thank you to all who have contributed to his care. Without your help, Scooby would have had much more limited options for treatment. This spirited dog deserves a second chance."

"THIS DOG WILL WALK AGAIN"  is what we and every rescuer wants to here in a case like this!!  THANK YOU to everyone who donated.  Now lets get SCOOBY some wheels!!!!!  :D

  • There is nothing but FIGHT and MOTIVATION in this miracle dog!
SCOOBY continues to show signs of improvement and he hasn't even begun PT yet!  He seems to be lifting his hips up half way to do his "business" and even walked on his knees a bit on the grass.
It has been just 1 week since his surgery and with these little improvements we are becoming more and more hopeful for SCOOBY's recovery.
Thursday he heads back to Coamo for his post op appointment and removal of those annoying staples.  The doctor will then give us a better time frame for Physical therapy and how he believes the recovery is going.

There will never be enough Thank You's to everyone who has supported Scooby's journey, sent items and donated to his fundraiser!  We could not have done it without all of you.

  • SCOOBY update from his foster mom Ellen -

“Scooby continues to amaze me (and everyone around him!) with his resilience! Last night and again today, we noticed him lifting his hips when trying to move, at one point he lifted them about halfway up. I gave him a nylabone that was donated to give him something to keep him busy in his crate. He is such a great dog!”

    Keep fighting SCOOBY!

Thank you to everyone who has donated and sent words of encouragement to Scooby!

  • OK All you SCOOBY FANS!!!

    SCOOBY has left the hospital!!

He is on a host of medications to keep him calm and minimize his activity for 6-8 weeks but we know he's a fighter and will want to bust a move sooner than that.
His follow up post op is March 22nd when he will have his stitches removed and evaluate his recovery. We are hopeful he will begin Physical Therapy not long after that which is estimated to be around $200 for 6 sessions.
He's still in pain but the medication will help as well as some wonderful sleeps on his Tempurpedic bed, a full meal and lots of love and attention.

Please continue to support SCOOBY. He still has many days of healing ahead.

    March 15, 2018

We are so happy to report SCOOBY had his surgery and he is resting comfortably thanks to his friend Morphine.

We will have more updates as the days progress but wanted to give thanks to the wonderful Dr. Colon in Coamo and everyone for their donations and well wishes!

    March 13, 2018

  • Scooby's surgery has been postponed for a WEEK :(

His platelets and hemoglobin levels are too low and he will need to be on doxycycline and a few other medications for at least a week before they test him again.

This is not only a setback for Scooby but it's going to cost $23 a DAY to board him at the vet.

PLEASE consider donating to his fundraiser!  Every little bit helps especially with all these surprise costs.

  • I'm sure everyone has been waiting for a SCOOBY update!
His foster mom made the 2 hour trek up to the orthopedic surgeon in Coamo. He is a little trooper in the car and after a long wait he was finally seen by Dr. Josean Colon.
There was mixed news. Because of SCOOBY's youth and because his owner allowed him to suffer in pain for so long, he has missed the window of opportunity for him to have a fusion. However, he is a candidate for a laminectomy, a decompression procedure where the bone of the spine is removed to allow the spinal cord and nerves to breathe. Great news is that SCOOBY will have surgery tomorrow morning followed by a couple of days of observation!!
He will return to his foster home to spend two months healing, followed by physical therapy. SCOOBY has an incredibly LONG, EXPENSIVE road ahead. We could use any donation you can afford to send his way. Our wish is that we can relieve SCOOBY of his pain and we do hope that he realizes how many people are rooting for him.

Thanks to everyone who has donated. SCOOBY has a chance at a better life because of YOU!

  • From his new rescuer.... 2nd vet visit today.....

UPDATE: The surgeon in Hatillo doesn't do spinal surgery. I'll have to bring him to San Juan. So far, I cannot reach the surgeon in San Juan and his mailbox is full.

Here is the situation with Scooby: He has a broken joint at L1/L2 and possibly 2-3 blown discs around the joint. His pelvis and legs are fine and his deep pain response tells is that messages are getting through his spinal cord. He tested positive for Ehrlichia, anaplasma, (both tick borne illnesses) hookworm, and tape worm. He is currently incontinent due to inflammation and hopefully not spinal cord injury. He has a skin infection from fleas which is itchy but he can't scratch without hind legs, so he has sores from biting himself.

Treatment: He will be on doxycycline for two weeks for the tick borne illnesses and three days of dewormer. He has had Nexgard for the ticks and fleas. He will continue in Prednisone to reduce inflammation and he increased his dosage of Tramadol. He had an enema today and will take a laxative for the time being. The issue with his back is complicated. Because he is only 8-10 months old, his bones grow fast. And because his care was delayed, he may already be improperly fused and not a candidate for surgery. I will be bringing him to an orthopedic specialist in Hatillo as soon as they can see him and they will evaluate him to see if he is a candidate for surgery.

If you have read this far, then you know this is an expensive case and Scooby will be needing support desperately. While euthanasia was a consideration, we really want to give this young sweetheart a chance. Please donate and share his story.

Know someone who could give him a home?   Please let us know!   He can fly to the right home!!!

    February 28, 2018

  • He made it to the Vet THANKS TO YOUR DONATIONS AND SHARES!!!  What his future holds is up to all of us now - share his story and we can find him a forever home that can give him the best life possible!!!

    From his rescuer .....

They (Vet) told me they can't do nothing about him because he broke him l2 and l3 spine and that's a 2000-3000 dollars surgery. she said he still feels his leg and to give him medicine for the inflammation and pain and something for his skin and ticks. The vet also said to give him therapy and see if somebody decides to adopt him like that and buy him a little cart for him.
