Hospitalization

  • Breed: Pit Bull Terrier
  • Name: Sweet Pea
  • Color: Brown
  • Size: Medium
  • Sex: Female
  • Age: Adult

Sweet Pea was found on April 26th -- she had been dumped on the side of the road and her face was so swollen and disfigured it was difficult to even tell what breed she is.

We will never know what happened for sure, but we suspect without too much doubt she was used as a bait dog, that she was in some horrific dog fights, and that the wounds and the festering infection in her face and mouth are not new. We believe she was likely dumped after she was of no more use as a fighter and left to die. Her story is doubly sad when we realized this dog, who has been through hell, is a sweet and loving soul (hence her name). She has no reason to trust mankind, and yet she loves with all her heart.

Sweet Pea was taken to the emergency vet immediately upon rescue. She had a massive infection in her face and mouth, her eyes were swollen with ulcers, her spleen and lymph nodes were enlarged, she was very anemic, and she has a category-2 heart murmur. She is in enormous pain, but all who meet her maintain that she is a tremendously kind and sweet dog.

Today, Sweet Pea had surgery to remove almost all the skin on her face -- it was necrotic and could not be saved. She will remain in the hospital for 10 more days and will then need follow-up appointments as she recovers. We raised the donations for her ER visit and today's surgery, but we still need to raise the funds to keep her in the hospital.

For the first time in this sweet soul's life, she now knows love. We are hopeful that she continues to see that humans can be good and compassionate.

Please help us heal Sweet Pea. Her remaining bill will be over $1,500 and the average cost for her care and medication is $150/day, which will continue for the foreseeable future.

We appreciate anything you can do to help make her whole again.

Thank you to everyone who donated to this beautiful dog. One company, Daily Dally was so touched by her story they contacted us directly to send Sweet Pea a special bed. Thank you Poundwishes for supporting so many pets in need.

  • We are so pleased to see how well Sweet Pea is doing while she recovers. We are lifting her Wish amount to ensure that she will have funding for possible future skin graphs, infections or anything else that may arise while she is healing and returning to a healthy weight. If she raises anything over her goal amount, it will go toward her after care. Please continue to help with her funding, and her wishlist needs to ensure she is comfortable while healing/recovering.

  • Sweet pea has made a lot of progress over the last week. The ointment on her face is helping her skin heal without peeling. She still has a long way to go before she will be considered fully healed.

  • The picture shows Sweet Peas's gratitude to being rescued from her life of pain and horror.  She is now home and healing slowing but steadily.  She returns to the doctor in 2 an half weeks we pray at that visit, we find her spleen and lymph nodes returned to normal, that she will no longer be anemic and her protein levels up.  She has necrotic skin on her forehead the may be removed at that time.  But we thank each and every donor for making it possible for Sweet Pea to know love, security and comfort.  She is still in pain, but soon that will just be a memory.
