Linda found herself sitting on the cold floor of a local shelter. The volunteers there advocated for her, and she was transferred to the amazing care of Dallas Dogs RRR. Shortly after being rescued, she was rushed to the ER in critical condition -- in a rapid turn of events, Linda was suddenly fighting for her life.
When she arrived at the vet, Linda was struggling to breathe. Her PVC levels were low and she needed a blood transfusion as soon as possible. Her abdomen was full of fluid, which appeared to be a bloody substance, and she was turning septic. The vet needed to do an ultrasound to find out if she was suffering from potential heart failure or heartworms. When the results finally came in, all were shocked.
Linda was not in heart failure, but she was in fact, pregnant. We were rooting for healthy babies, but sadly, all of the puppies were deceased in her abdomen. The doctor tapped her belly and drained 9,000 ml of fluid off, which weighed in at almost 3 lbs and was responsible for her septic condition. It was clear that she would need to have emergency surgery to figure out exactly what was going on. Ultimately, vets discovered that her uterus had ruptured and the babies were decomposing in her abdomen. It seems there was a baby stuck in the birth canal, and it had blocked the fluid's path, causing her belly to fill. Linda's abdomen was full of puppy bones, which was causing a severe infection. The surgery to remove the babies lasted almost four hours. The doctors said she is one of the toughest pups they have met because she has defied so many odds. Linda should be dead, but she fought for her life and is determined to keep fighting.
We were told she was in this condition from anywhere between 10 days to 3 weeks. She required multiple blood transfusions and even had an albumin transfusion the other day. Even though her surgery is over, she is by no means out of danger. They believe she will still need to have another surgery to clean out the remainder of her stomach. After everything this tough mama has been through, she deserves a shot at a normal life. Linda's medical bills are through the roof and her rescue needs help to pay them off.
