For-Good, For-Animals, For-Women
Natalise Kalea, COO poundWISHES
I think it needs to be said. poundWISHES is not just a for-good, for-animals company; it's a for-women company. And here's why -- our business serves a majority-female rescue base, our business is supported by a majority-female community, and our business is comprised of a majority-female team. Now, we seek more female investors.
THE MAJORITY OF RESCUE FOUNDERS ARE STRONG, BRAVE WOMEN
We work with and serve 1,000+ rescues, shelters, and sanctuaries across the globe. And what I've observed is that almost all of the founders of these organizations are women... akin to 98%. It is amazing to me the overwhelming drive and passion these women exhibit to save animals. And for the vast majority of these founders, running a rescue is not their full-time job. In fact, they have other jobs they tend to during the week, and then after work and on the weekends, they dedicate their time, money, and resources to helping animals. Here at poundWISHES, we've heard stories from many of these women who have gone into debt in order to save the animals that come into their care. Part of our mission is to help decrease, or even eliminate, this debt, so that rescue founders can continue to do the good work they do, saving animals around the world. Our mission is to deliver tools that help our partners find a path to sustainability.
OVER 80% OF OUR COMMUNITY ARE GENEROUS, EMPATHETIC WOMEN
We have a community of over 150,000 animal lovers. And guess what? Over 80% are women. poundWISHES has raised over $2M and saved over 3,000 animals in the last two years, and this effort has been largely supported by women who care. As a woman, myself, I find this fact incredibly inspiring -- to see women supporting other women. Here at poundWISHES, we have a community of compassionate people (mostly women) putting their dollars where their hearts are -- to support local rescues (mostly founded by women) and save animals.
THE poundWISHES TEAM IS MAJORITY FEMALE
We have a small, but passionate, team at poundWISHES. And the majority of our team are women. Just like our communities of rescues and supporters, our team is made of empathetic people inspired and motivated to make a difference for animals.
SO… WHY IS GENDER IMPORTANT TO MENTION?
Last week, poundWISHES launched a mini-OPO (online public offering) via StartEngine, which means that anyone, between now and June 11th, can buy stock in the company. We thought this opening was important because, as a for-good business, we wanted to allow our community -- a group of over 150,000 passionate animal lovers -- to partake in the investment. But here's my secret hope: I want to see women from around the world invest and be owners in a company that is for-good, for-animals, and for-women.
In 2017, Crunchbase released a Women in Venture report stating that a mere 8% of partners in VC are women. And while better, it was reported that 21% of angel investors are women. The poundWISHES investor pool prior to the launch of our OPO exhibited a 87% men / 13% women distribution. And now, just 10 days after the launch, the number for women has doubled -- 745 men / 26% women. I, personally, am excited and hope this trend only continues. After all, the majority of the people we serve, garner support from, and engage with are women. So it only makes sense that more women be owners in poundWISHES. Side note: of course, this is not to take anything away from the AWESOME men who have supported and invested in poundWISHES, including our CEO John Hussey who was the first angel to invest in the company. But I write this note to say that having female investors is also meaningful, beneficial, and in alignment with who we are as a company.
There's this stereotype that women, and in particular caring women, aren't risk takers. But, I don't think that's true. I'd like to see women break the mold and prove that compassionate risk-takers who put their dollars where they wish to see change can make a difference. It is with these kinds of investments that we can force the winds of change to better the world in our unique way.
