Responsible Dog Ownership Day!

Responsible Dog Ownership Day!

Responsible Dog Ownership Day is the third Saturday of September! This day is a great time to celebrate your pups, while also taking the time to reflect about what it means to be a pet parent. . Dogs bring so much joy into our lives. I think we can all agree that it's important to ensure two things: that 1) our pups remain healthy, happy and safe and 2) we're doing everything in our power to make sure #1 happens.

A large number of animals get surrendered to shelters after purchase or adoption every year because potential pet parents sometimes overlook all the care involved when taking in a canine companion. It's really unfortunate because it's a lose-lose situation for both the family and the dog. So here's a checklist of pet parenthood just to make sure you're not at risk:

Be ready for a life change.

Dogs, especially puppies or ones with behavioral issues, require patience, GREAT patience. You might need to wake up earlier or stay up later; you might need to spend time training your dog when you're usually out running errands, working out, or doing other things; you might need to come home early from that social outing to relieve your dog of her anxiety being home alone, etc. There are so many adjustments, big and small, that we don't think about before bringing a new family member into the house. But, if you are open to and expect change, then you'll be a step ahead.

2) Be ready for commitment.

You wouldn't leave your husband two weeks after marrying him if it got hard, right? Similarly, by bringing a dog into your home, you have committed to living together, and more importantly, caring for this living, breathing, wonderful being. You are responsible for this pup's survival. So make it work. Sometimes it will get tough. Yes, he might chew your baseboards and yes, he might have an accident in the house. But in the end, the process of training and getting to know your animal will bring you closer. And ultimately, that pup will be the best thing that happened to you.

3) Be ready to spend some $$. Dogs are like children. They cost money. You'll need to be prepared to stock up on essentials. Being a responsible dog owner, you want to make sure you have the best quality items for them, so that their lives will not only be full, but also long. With CUDDLY, we make it easy for new and existing animal lovers to continually be the best dog parents. When you create a registry you are able to add every product your pet might need. Once you create a registry, you can share it with your friends or purchase items yourself. Here's the best part, when you or anyone buys items from your pet's registry, 5% goes back to the rescue of your choice! It's a win-win; you are being a responsible dog owner and doing good at the same time.

4) Be ready for love.

Dogs are AWESOME with a capital A. If you're already a dog owner, you know firsthand that a dog can bring so much pure joy to your life. So many people we have met through the CUDDLY journey have shared with us that dogs taught them how to love unconditionally or saved them from life, from themselves. When you're a responsible dog owner, you are taking care of this amazing being that gives you love every, single day.
